The Syrian army, after controlling the eastern Ghouta, revealed a network of tunnels used by the opposition factions, which extends to the Joubar Damascene neighborhood.

These tunnels were used to bring food from Damascus to sell to the population for a profit that could exceed double its real price. Two field cemeteries were also found underground.

The Syrian army took control of the Jouber neighborhood and the eastern towns of Ghouta, following the evacuation of more than 40,000 people from the Al-Rahman faction and civilians from the area, which is devastated by the number of battles and shelling.

Tunnel activity declined during 2017, when the Syrian army managed to control the neighborhoods of Qaboun, Barza and Tshreen in eastern Damascus, relying mainly on the tunnels between the Joubar district and the nearby eastern Ghouta townships controlled by the faction of the Rahman Corps.
