Torres announces his departure from Atletico Madrid
MADRID (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres plans to leave the Spanish Premier League club when his contract expires at the end of the season to try to play more.
The 34-year-old has only played three Serie A matches this season and has played 17 matches from the bench and scored two goals.
"I want to take this opportunity to say that this will be my last season with the club," Torres said in a media interview on Monday.
"I accept that I no longer have a big role, so this is the right moment to step aside for the opportunity for others."
The Spanish striker is spending his second spell with the club he left in 2007 to join Liverpool. The player also spent periods with Chelsea and AC Milan before returning to Spain in 2015.
"It's hard to say goodbye for the second time because I wanted to retire here, but things do not always go as you please.
"I feel that I have the physical and mental ability to play, and I'm looking for a chance to play somewhere else," he concluded.
